Lymph nodes in face5/2/2023 On occasion lymph nodes can trap bacteria, viruses or cancerous cells that the lympocytes cannot destroy in order to keep disease at bay. Your doctor may decide to perform an ultrasound or CT scan of the area of concern to better evaluate the lymph nodes. Although lymph nodes can grow because of infections as can happen with cervical/neck lymph nodes with upper respiratory infections and groin lymph nodes with pelvic infections your doctor will likely want to evaluate any lymph node that you can feel or which appears to be growing. Generally a lymph node that is growing is a reason to be evaluated by your clinician. Lymph node sizes are traditionally used to identify possible existence of pathology and to direct the need for biopsy. Additionally these normal structures can have cancers which grow primarily in the lymph nodes rather than using the lymph nodes to travel and this is referred to as lymphoma Growing lymph nodes? Lymph nodes and the lymphatic channels can however act as pathway for metastatic cancer (transfer of a cancer from a localized site to more distant sites). Lymph nodes in their normal state are normal structures found throughout the human body which function to fight infection and cancer. Through this lymphatic system the predominant cell type is the white blood cells (Lymphocytes) which is an immune response cell that uses these channels to travel to areas of where they are needed to fight infection and disease. Lymph nodes are small bean shaped structures (of which there are hundreds through the body) which are connected to one another to form what is called the lymphatic system, This system serves as a biological filter by trapping and destroying harmful things/cells including bacteria, viruses or damaged cells which can become cancer.
